Hallux Valgus (Bunion) Correction
This information is provided to give you an idea of what to expect after your surgery. Most of the time, this protocol is followed, however, variations in healing or individual situations may alter the timeline.
What can I expect after surgery?
Week 1-2: You will be in a heavy bandage and a post-operative shoe. You should leave the bandage and shoe intact until your follow-up. Do not bear weight and keep the dressing dry. If the bandage is wet or blood soaked, you may change it with a clean dry dressing or call the office. Keep your leg elevated above the level of your heard as much as possible to minimize swelling.
Week 2-4: The sutures will be removed and you may shower. Do not soak the foot in a bath or hot tub. Do not bear weight. Continue to wear the shoe at all times. Change the dressing with a clean, dry bandage.
Week 4-12: You may begin to bear full weight as tolerated in the shoe only. Wean from the crutches and you may remove the shoe for sleeping. Begin self range of motion exercises for your toe.
Week 12-24: You may gradually resume all activities as tolerated using pain as your guide to advance. You may transition into a regular shoe, but continued swelling is common and expected at this point. You may need to purchase wider shoes or open toed sandals.
