Hammertoe Correction with Osteotomy
This information is provided to give you an idea of what to expect after your surgery. Most of the time, this protocol is followed, however, variations in healing or individual situations may alter the timeline.
What can I expect after surgery?
Week 1-2: You will have a heavy bandage and a post-operative shoe in place. There will likely be pins with small plastic balls sticking out of the end of your toes. Leave the bandage and shoe in place until your follow-up appointment. Do not bear weight. You may change the bandage if it gets wet or is soaked with blood.
Week 2-4: Your sutures will be removed, but the pins will remain in place. You need to continue to keep your foot dry while the pins remain in place. The shoe should continue to be worn at all times and when sleeping to avoid catching the pins. You should change your dressing daily until the wounds are dry and well healed.
Pin Care: While the pins are in place, use a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and saline (contact lens solution works well) to clean the area where the pin enters the skin. Use a Q-tip and do this once daily.
Pin Migration: Pins sometimes move by getting caught in sheets or kicked. If the pin ball is against the skin: Pull it back away from the skin to avoid excess pressure. If the pin pulls out: DO NOT PUSH IT BACK IN! This can cause an infection. Call the office for further instructions.
Week 4-14: Your pins will be removed in the office. You may now shower but avoid baths or hot tubs until the pin holes are well healed. You may bear weight in the post-op shoe. You may begin range of motion of your toes.
Week 12-24: You may transition to a normal shoe. Swelling is common and expected at this point. You may need to purchase wider shoes or sandals. You may gradually resume all activities as tolerated.
